Persevering (5/08/26)

This week, we focus on steadfastness—the strength to endure and remain firm in the face of challenges. Let’s explore how perseverance shapes both Stoic character and Christian faith.
Exploring the Stoic Principle: Persevering
Stoic philosophy prizes endurance. Seneca wrote, “Endure and grow,” highlighting that hardship is not an obstacle but a path to strength. Stoics learn to persist through discomfort, trusting that resilience is built through challenge.
Turn your perspective from “I have to run” into “I get to run.” The ability to welcome the challenge will overcome any emotional residue you have toward the task.
Unpacking the Scripture: 1 Corinthians 16:13
1 Corinthians 16:13 urges, “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” This call to steadfastness reminds believers to remain grounded, even when tested.
One of my favorite expressions is, “Let your test be your testimony!”
Patience isn’t the ability to wait, but rather how we act while we wait. I have difficulty with patience, which is why I’m always being tested on it. I know that these “tests” happen because of God’s love. They will make me stronger. At some point, I may be complimented on how I handled a stressful situation with calm and patience - and my testimony will be because I endured and learned through being steadfast.
The Deep Connection
Stoic perseverance and Christian steadfastness both emphasize resilience. The Stoic relies on inner discipline, while the Christian draws strength from faith in God. Together, they offer a powerful approach—standing firm with both conviction and courage.
Action Steps for the Week Ahead
Finish What You Start: Commit to completing one task, even when it’s difficult.
Strength Reflection: Reflect on 1 Corinthians 16:13 and where you need firmness.
Embrace Discomfort: Choose to push through a small challenge rather than avoid it.
Encouragement for Your Journey
Steadfastness is built in moments when giving up feels easier. Every time you continue, you reinforce your strength and deepen your faith. Keep standing firm—you’re building something lasting.
